Virtual Field Trips & Demonstrations: Handel’s Ice Cream

Santiago STEAM Magnet is proud to present our Virtual Field Trips and (Cool) Demonstrations program. At Santiago STEAM, our students are asked to think outside of the box to solve problems and innovate solutions. Our students are preparing to be leaders in their community and to push boundaries in their future endeavors. Here, local businesses are working with our PTA to bring the future of STEAM education to a reality, by providing a behind the scene’s look into exciting careers that can be gained with the aid of a STEAM education.

This next field trip is to Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream to learn about the process to make ice cream and create different flavors.

Here’s their story:

On a hot summer day in July, 1945, Alice Handel began serving ice cream out of her husbands gas station in Youngstown, Ohio. Her first batches were made using old fashioned recipes with fresh fruit she picked from her own backyard. Since then, Handel’s has grown to include locations in California, Florida, Indiana, Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Arizona and Oregon. The menu has expanded to include over 100 flavors of homemade ice cream and yogurt.

STEAM careers come in all different shapes and sizes, including ones in the kitchen. Skills needed to cook, bake and even to make ice cream need engineers to build the machinery and equipment, artists to design signage, marketing and engage on social media, mathematicians to measure, create ice cream flavors and budget, as well as food scientists to create the consistency of ice cream we all love.

In this field trip you’ll get a tour of the Handel’s Lake Forest location. See how they combine ingredients to make a base ice cream, and add additional flavorings and ingredients to create a variety of ice cream selections. Finally they freeze their mixes to turn it into ice cream ready by the next day.
