California becomes the first state to provide free lunches for all 6.2 million students regardless of family income. This is a major win for our young children, many of whom go hungry, but have not met the strict cutoff to qualify for free meals. All students will get a free breakfast and lunch, no questions asked.
Food Service K-12
Meals will be provided to ALL students free of charge again this school year and for the foreseeable future! While families are not required to complete a meal application to access these free meals, they are encouraged to complete one to qualify for the additional benefits associated with this eligibility (P-EBT card, reduction in fees for bus passes, home internet access, utilities, and AP/SAT/PSAT testing). The application remains a required document to view in the data confirmation process. Our online application program has changed this school year. We are using Titan School Solutions. The link to access the online application remains on the food service homepage, http://educafe.svusd.org.
Elementary Service
Teachers will continue to ask students if they would like lunch when they take attendance. Students just need to raise their hands so the teacher can get an accurate count. This will ensure enough food is prepared for all students requesting a meal. Students will go thru the lunch line similar to our pre-COVID years. They will have entrée options to choose from and a variety of wrapped items from the produce bar they can select. We will NOT be using our POS computer system at this time nor selling any items a la carte. No cash handling will take place. Breakfast will be bagged and taken to classrooms to be distributed to students upon dismissal as it was last school year.
Free and Reduced Lunch Applications:
This year, all students will be provided meals free of change. While families are not required to complete a meal application to access these free meals, they are encouraged to complete one to qualify for the additional benefits associated with this eligibility (P-EBT card, reduction in fees for bus passes, home internet access, and utilities). It also determines our status as a Title I school, giving us the opportunity to access a large fund to support all students at Santiago STEAM Magnet.
