Welcome to Santiago STEAM Magnet PTA!!!
Hello Santiago STEAM Families,
With the winter solstice behind us, and longer days ahead of us, the Santiago STEAM Magnet PTA is ready to get to work.
PTA Board Elections – March 3rd
Every year we elect a new PTA board. This year we’ll have a lot of changes since officers can only be elected into their position for 2 consecutive years. Which means, most of the board will be changing positions or no longer serving on the board. We’re looking for fresh new faces from eager PTA members who want to get involved and make things happen. If you would like to nominate yourself for a board position, be on the lookout for a bloomz announcement coming soon on how to sign up for consideration. For the record, my oldest child was in kindergarten when I was elected president. So we’ll take enthusiasm and a willingness to pitch in, over experience, any day!
Santiago Go Green Sneaker Recycling Station – January 3rd-7th
Recycle your sneakers! To celebrate our new “Every Journey Starts with a Single Step” garden art, the PTA has partnered with @gotsneakersusa to recycle or reuse sneakers that often end up in landfill contributing to toxic chemicals being released in our air and soil. All sneakers will be recirculated to people who want footwear at affordable prices or repurposed into new surfaces such as playgrounds and tracks.
We will be collecting used sneakers the first week back from winter break. If you or your kids get new sneakers over the break, don’t throw the old ones away! Simply put them in the bin at the Single Step display, on the Innovation Quad. If you see a pair you like in the bin, you’re welcome to take them home and give them another run. Everything in the bins will be sent to @gotsneakersusa at the end of Friday, January 7th.
The multiphase gardening project is in full swing, transforming garden areas. When you have time, give yourself a tour around the school during non-school hours to see all the improvements. Many of the gardens offer interactive elements and/or outdoor learning environments. If you haven’t already, follow Garden Club on instagram @santiagosteamgarden and email them at firstname.lastname@example.org to join. In addition to the budget provided by the PTA for Garden Club, we’ve also partnered with the Home Depot in Mission Viejo. Their team came out just before winter break to plant a fruit orchard, and are also planning to help us with the next phase of the garden project. Garden Club has also established an exciting partnership with CalPoly Pomona. Starting this winter, CalPoly graduate and undergraduate classes will be collaborating with our students to envision a potential new outdoor learning space for our school.
Dine & Donate Events
Our next Dine & Donate is January 20th from 10:30am-10pm at Mod Pizza. If you choose to get lunch or dinner from Mod Pizza on this date, 20% of sales go back to the Santiago PTA. Additional Dine & Donate dates coming soon.
Virtual Field Trips & Demonstrations
We have put together several field trips this year for families to enjoy at their leisure. All students who watch virtual field trips and then respond to the form on the page will receive a Virtual Field Trip & Demonstration spirit button. Check out the field trips so far and look for more to come.
Night Out at the Ballpark – Angel Stadium
This spring, let’s all go to a ball game! We have been invited to do a special fundraiser with Angel Stadium, that will also be a great community night out. Buy tickets to the Angels vs. Blue Jays on May 26th at 6:38PM through the provided Santiago LINK. Tickets have been discounted to $15, and with every ticket purchased, $6 will be donated back to the PTA.
When you click on the link, there are several sections to choose from. We’re going to encourage Santiago Families to get tickets from the “Field Box” section so we can all sit together, but of course, you are welcome to choose another selection if you wish. Feel free to share the link with families and friends. The more the merrier. Get tickets. Mark your calendars. Wear your Santiago steam wear, and we’ll see you at the ballpark!
The yearbook purchase window is open! Purchase your yearbook for $25 with our Santiago PTA PayPal Form at http://bit.ly/santiagopaypal. Complete the Form with your order information and then make a “Friends and Family” Paypal payment. More details atsantiagopta.com
Spring Festival, Silent Auction, & 50th Anniversary Celebration
As of now, we are planning on moving forward with a combo spring festival, silent auction and 50th Anniversary event this spring. These plans are very tentative and may be changed or canceled based on COVID precautions. If we do move forward we will need help.
Silent Auction Volunteers – Will be needed to donate items, ask employers to donate items or services, or to work alone or in teams to walk retail areas and ask for donations. This may sound daunting, but it’s pretty easy once you get the hang of it. Think of it as a nice walk with a purpose. Volunteers pick a shopping area and print off several PTA donation request letters. Each volunteer goes store to store with the letter and let’s the manager know that we’re collecting donations for our silent auction. We’d love a donation of items or services, and the donation will be tax deductible. Silent auction is important because it brings in a large sum that can be used to further PTA activities and support our school.
Spring Festival Volunteers – This spring we will post a signup on bloomz. These volunteers are very important. Without people manning the booths and helping to set up and clean up, the festival can’t happen.
Festival Booth Builders – We are still in the planning stages, but we anticipate we’ll need a couple of games, activities or anniversary related items built. If you’re an engineer or builder, please be on the lookout for PTA announcements.
This is another great way to get involved. Dad’s Club has been an invaluable resource when we need things built, items need fixed, muscles need to lift, push or pull, trucks need to be loaded, and help is generally needed. If you would like to throw your skills into the mix, please sign up here: https://santiagopta.com/2021/07/20/learn-more-about-dads-club/
The first spirit wear window closed. Orders were delivered to school before break, and a few remaining items will be delivered the first week in January. A third, and final window, will open in March and feature our 50th Anniversary Design at a low cost to families.
Thank you everyone for your support and interest in the PTA. Without dedicated volunteers and a community that cares, none of this would be possible.
